Quando meno te lo aspetti esce un disco che ti spiazza, ti prende come una dolce ossessione, ti cattura senza fallo nelle sue spire ipnotiche. Accessibile eppure stimolante, con una straniante qualità oltramondana, fatta di echi e riverberi, rumori e suoni bellissimi che si sposano con melodie solari ed esplosive: è primavera e Panda Bear lo sa bene.
In un colpo solo riesce a superare tutto quanto fatto con gli Animal Collective trovando un magico equilibrio: sempre più accessibile, appetibile, piacevole come una carezza per l'orecchio stanco e nello stesso tempo distante, inafferrabile, misterioso come le migliori passioni, quelle durevoli. Un corto circuito virtuoso dove suonare sballati senza ricalcare clichè abusati, rielaborare vecchie sonorità (Beach Boys) facendole suonare nuove, inedite, inaudite. Lo spettro di Pet Sounds aleggia su tutto il disco ma non è una reincarnazione falsa, posticcia bensì lo spirito di quelle mitiche sessions che ritrova nuova linfa bagnandosi in acque feconde. Il capolavoro è "Bros" con la sua coda lisergica di suoni sovrapposti o "Good Gilr/Carrots" che si snoda in tre parti una più bella dell'altra? O tutti e due forse? 12 minuti l'uno che trascorrono senza tempo come fossero, non inni a Dio, ma al Divino. E che peso ha avuto Lisbona in queste atmosfere rilassate, oceaniche?
Panda Bear ritrova se stesso lontano dalla natia America, abbeverandosi alla sorgente della vita dalla parte opposta del mondo. E ci regala una serie di melodie belle, limpide, ossessive montate su basi ripetitive di musica elettroacustica assolutamente calda, accogliente, umana. Insomma: che disco è? Brian Wilson incontra gli Hare Krishna e insieme decidono di festeggiare con torte all'LSD, ecco che disco è! Uscita imprescindibile del 2007.
