24 dicembre 1982, vigilia di Natale.
In quel di New York decisero di organizzare una serie di concerti spaccaossa in un localino da niente... seh, come no! Nientepopodimeno che al CBGB, un'istituzione praticamente.
Come sempre, una più che sintetica introduzione a chi è sconosciuto a questo collettivo: i Bad Brains sono quattro simpatici Rastafariani, considerati tra i gruppi chiave del genere Hardcore Punk della scena di Washington D.C., prima ondata naturalmente. La ricetta di base era quella di alternare brani puramente Hardcore Punk, appunto, e Reggae; nel corso degli anni ebbero modo di sperimentare anche con Heavy Metal e Funk, tra l'altro. Straordinario, no?
Nel febbraio 1982 uscì il loro disco di debutto omonimo, con cui riuscirono a "scardinare le porte" del Punk, come già suggerito poco fa. Una pietra miliare.
Questo per far capire dove ci troviamo sulla linea del tempo, ovvero agli albori ma anche a quelli che si potranno definire con il senno di poi i migliori anni dei Bad Brains, senza dubbio.
Il concerto viene aperto dai Minor Threat (che non hanno certo bisogno di presentazioni) e dai The Young And The Useless (noto ai più per essere stato il primo gruppo di un certo Ad-Rock dei Beastie Boys, che ebbe pure l'occasione di farsi le ossa suonando a fianco di altri gruppi storici, come Ramones, Hüsker Dü e Dead Kennedys).
Come si può forse intuire, la maggior parte della tracklist è occupata dai brani presenti sul disco omonimo ma c'è anche parecchio spazio a versioni molto ben definite di perle che faranno parte dei dischi successivi e alcuni pezzi che rimarrano inediti fino all'uscita di questo disco (solo nel 2006).
Tra le molteplici da citare ovviamente ci sono grandi classici come "Banned In D.C.", "Right Brigade" e "Supertouch/Shitfit" dall'omonimo; "I And I Survive", "Rally 'Round Jah Throne" e "The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth" dall'allora futuro "Rock For Light", uno dei picchi di massimo splendore del quartetto. Da segnalare un'ottima "All Rise To Meet Jah".
Ascoltandolo soltanto notiamo che la qualità viene un po' a mancare quando si cimentano nei brani più veloci e violenti, culminando nel caos totale degli strumenti e della vocalità schizofrenica del cantante H.R. quando si appresta a questo tipo di composizioni.
Proprio per questo motivo l'ideale sarebbe accompagnare l'ascolto alla visione del video, cosa di importanza pressochè vitale quando ci si trova di fronte a degli spettacoli di questo calibro: bisogna osservare attentamente le movenze dei membri, in modo particolare di H.R., che balla, salta, gira su sè stesso e ogni tanto ci scappa pure qualche salto mortale.
Una bestia che si trasforma periodicamente durante i brani dal gusto Reggae/Dub, mutando in una creatura angelica, sensuale e riflessiva.
Un'esplosività e un calore che fu in grado di ammaliare un pubblico formato dai più svariati tipi di personalità presenti.
All'inizio sembrava una data qualsiasi, eppure in quelle serate (e in particolar modo questa) sono state cambiate delle vite: un po' tutti hanno sentito parlare della (divertente) storia secondo la quale tutti noi siam stati concepiti mentre in sottofondo risuonavano le note di Marvin Gaye e la sua "Let's Get It On" o "Sexual Healing"... beh, una miriade di gruppi Hardcore Punk sono nati dopo aver assistito al concerto dei Bad Brains, alcuni nati da incontri puramente fortuiti. Questo è un fatto però.
