Sorprendenti.
Come altro definirli, dopo aver sentito questo disco?
Canzoni strutturalmente una diversa dall'altra, melodie che ricordano vagamente film anni '60-'70, il tutto nonostante le loro voci al limite dell'irritante.
Infatti, senza stare a ripetere quello che ho già scritto (per questo c'è la recensione del penultimo album), la ragazza ha una voce stridula, a volte quasi isterica, mentre lui in certi momenti ricorda Daniel Johnston, che è tutto dire!
Ma più che un difetto, si tratta ormai di un loro marchio di fabbrica, e il fatto che si alternino di canzone in canzone rende il tutto più vario.
Accennavo prima dell'anarchia delle canzoni: bene, per dare l'idea ascoltate i due sample.
Traccia numero 8, "Maddening Cloud".
30 secondi di introduzione chitarra-batteria-basso, il cui ritmo funkeggiante OBBLIGA a ondeggiare la testa, poi uno si aspetta la strofa e invece niente, parte il ritornello incazzato, cui poi segue tutto il resto, compresa una pausa verso la fine: uno pensa sia finita, invece si comincia a sentire in sottofondo la voce che cresce, cresce e la canzone continua: fidatevi, è bellissima.
Traccia numero 11, "Equus".
Stavolta canta il maschietto, si parte con il ritornello, con tanto di coretti, sciocchi ma che ci stanno bene, poi...ma no! quello non era il ritornello! il ritornello è subito dopo! e poi cos'è quello che si sente quasi alla fine? trombe??? tastiere??? però...non ci stanno male!
Ogni canzone è una sorpresa (positiva), comprese le due più lente e quella finale, la più psichedelica, l'unica nella quale cantano entrambi.
Mi ripeto, possono sembrare strani, ma acchiappano, e questo cd è MOLTO bello: è più maturo del precedente, più lungo, più completo (11 canzoni contro 8, cui aggiunsero due intermezzi), più complesso ma non meno accessibile.
Decisamente consigliato!

La complessità dietro la semplicità: melodie che non escono più dalla testa.
A volte forse è bene fare rewind, alla Blonde Redhead, e cambiare rotta.

Il noise degli esordi sembra definitivamente placato, dove le chitarre fanno solo da sfondo a più complessi arrangiamenti.
È nella traccia conclusiva, "Equus", che i nostri sembrano dare il meglio, liberandosi di eccessivi orpelli e recuperando quella semplicità.
