"Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" è il sesto lavoro dei Dream Theater e, anche se molti non saranno daccordo, a mio parere è uno dei più belli della loro discografia.
Quest'opera è in doppio cd (scelta coraggiosa visti i prezzi....): nel primo ci sono 5 tracce e nel secondo l'ultima con 42 minuti di bellissimo progressive metal più melodico. Al primo impatto "Six Degrees" sembrerebbe inascoltabile: i troppi assoli e l'eccessiva lunghezza della sesta canzone rischiano di far addormentare tutti... ma con un pò di pazienza si riesce ad apprezzare tutta la bellezza di questo lavoro.
Si inizia con "The Glass Prison", molto veloce, tipica canzone dei Dream, parte centrale da rivedere, ma finale davvero bello: gli ultimi 3 minuti hanno Petrucci e Portnoy scatenati, ritmo veloce che dà la carica. "Blind Faith" è la seconda traccia, (la peggiore nel primo cd) colpisce solo il ritornello, troppo ripetitiva e nessuna emozione... solo La Brie si salva con la sua straordinaria voce. Con "Misunderstood" finalmente ritornano i veri Dream, si apre con una melodia molto triste e malinconica ma a metà si cambia: la canzone si sveglia e inizia a piacere. Segue "The Great Debate", inizialmente si sente solo la tastiera di Rudess, pianopiano si uniscono anche gli altri aumentando sempre più il ritmo e in sottofondo voci di giornalisti che si "dibattono" sul problema delle cellule staminali, argomento principale della canzone. L'ultima traccia è la bellissma "Disappear", struggente e malinconica, veramente da apprezzare fino all'ultimo secondo... ci voleva prorio questa canzone per far riemergere la vera anima progressive dei Dream dopo 30 minuti troppo movimentati... l'unica nota stonata un'inizio troppo "confuso": la tastiera di Rudess e gli effetti sonori non sono un granchè.
Nel secondo cd c'è la Title Track cha ha come protagonisti 6 diversi personaggi (Six Degrees) con disturbi mentali (Inner Turbulence): i loro problemi e disagi vengono raccontati e cantati da La Brie e compagni in 8 atti per una durata di 40 min.... i più stupidi si fermerebbero qui: la notizia di dover star un'altra buona mezz'ora a sentire canzoni li fa addormentare... peccato che la parte migliore inizi proprio ora.
Si parte con "Overture"; hanno voluto dare l'impressione di "inizio film", infatti colpisce (molte volte negativamente) davvero tanto sentirla.. è strana.. gli amanti dei classici Dream la odiano.. ne sono sicuro, ma questo fa parte di loro.. vogliono sempre cambiare e stupire l'ascoltatore con nuove idee.
Il secondo atto è "About To Crash": dopo lo spavento iniziale (e chi l'ha sentita sà a cosa mi riferisco....) si continua con una canzone davvero carina, una piacevole melodia (che verrà ripresa anche nel finale) che rimane nella mente, forse troppo "pop" però si inserisce bene nell'opera.
Ora si entra in una parte più movimentata che però scade un pò di qualità: "War Inside My Head" dura pochi minuti, è troppo ripetitiva a mio parere, però il ritmo veloce dà una mano a renderla più orecchiabile. Segue "The Test That Stumped Them All" è il punto più basso del cd: non dico che è una schifezza, però sicuramente possono fare di meglio, non c'è anima in questa canzone e la voce di La Brie a metà stona un pò... se la potevano evitare. Per fortuna si cambia "strada": "Goodnight Kiss" rallenta notevolmente il ritmo, è molto tranquilla e malinconica, bellissimo il finale: trovo davvero perfetto l'attacco con la traccia seguente cioé "Solitary Shell", che definisco troppo noiosa anche se le melodie non sono male. E ora arriva il meglio... "About To Crash" viene ripresa benissimo con ritmo più veloce (davvero azzeccata questa scelta..) e fa da introduzione al gran finale di "Losing Time": bellissima, davvero affascinante con un'atmosfera malinconica che dà quella voglia di risentirla e di farsi trascinare ancora una volta dalla sua melodia così profonda e toccante. Solo quest'ultima traccia vale il prezzo del cd.
Si chiude così l'opera, solo dopo molti ascolti si può apprezzare la bellezza di questo doppio lavoro. Assolutamente da rivedere alcuni tratti, però io sono rimasto soddisfatto, sicuramente non siamo ai livelli di SFAM ma apprezzo Six Degrees (che definisco migliore di "Train Of Thought" e "Octavarium"), molto belli i testi di Petrucci e bravo anche La Brie. Sicuramente un'album più progressive che metal (menomale) con melodie orecchiabili.
Per concludere volevo solo aggiungiere che negli ultimi 4 lavori dei Dream Theater (a partire da SFAM fino ad arrivare a "Octavarium") è venuta fuori la loro vera l'anima progressive, certo, capolavori come "Space-Dye Vest" o "Change Of Season" non sono ripetibili, ma personalmente apprezzo di più queste opere che i classici "Awake" o "Images And Words".

Un album degno dei migliori Dream Theater, quasi alla pari dei vari „Images And Words“, „Awake“ e „Scenes From A Memory“.
