Questo è stato sfortunatamente l'album del mio approccio verso i Fantomas.
Li conoscevo appena, ma la mia curiosità verso di loro era potente, e questo mi ha spinto a comprare Director's Cut quando uscì.
Pauroso, ad orecchio imprudentee che non conosce Patton la prima traccia "The Godfather" può sembrare di primo acchitto una canzone death finnica, ma ascoltando il resto ti fa cancellare ogni dubbio.
Questo non è mai stato sentito.
Ripresa dalla nota colonna sonora del nostrano Nino Rota, The Godfather riassume ciò che patton ha proposto con il primo Fantomas.
Il violino che presenta la prima canzone e l'intero album lascia presagire nulla di buono (in senso buono ovviamente).
Il docile violino è seguito da un grind marcato da Dave Lombardo e con urla di Mr. Patton. Sfuriate seguite ed alternate da vocalizzi innocenti del buon Mike in una maestria, che fa di Patton il direttore d'orchestra del nuovo millennio.
A me fa godere.
La seconda traccia, "Der Golem", lenta e pesante come nessuna, mostra la libertà dei quattro sul come variare i soliti 4/4 che il metal propone.
Impossibile non citare tutte le tracce, dalla melodica e ipotetica hit "Experiment in Terror", l'accattivante "Cape Fear", la malinconica e "infantile" "Rosemary's Baby", La grind-core "The Omen" (che rimanda al tema del diavolo, in versione diversa, in chiave latina, che non poteva mancare nella "videoteca" dei Fantomas).
La cover del Morricone "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspiction" ricorda l'ambientazione dell'omonimo film di Elio Petri, canzone piena di maranzani e pianoforte. Qui ci ricordiamo che il buon Mike ama il nostro "bel paese".
Poi "Twin Peaks" lascia senza fiato. Melodie Pattoniane in cui riesce a soppiantare il sax della canzone originale con la sua versatilità che non conosce limiti.
Si finisce con la cover del tema di Sciarada: "Charade". Riprende il giro originale di percussione e ne fa base dei suoi deliri vocali. Un applauso registrato alla fine della canzone se lo merita eccome, e il pubblico sembra urlare: PATTON! PATTON! hanno le loro ragioni.
Ottime cover per ottimi film, scelti appositamente da Dio Patton. Ve li consiglio tutti se non li avete visti.
