"In your honor", il precedente lavoro dei Foo Fighters, era probabilmente il miglior album di American music degli anni 2000 insieme a "R" dei Queens of the Stone Age e al primo dei Kings of Leon, con i suoi accordi semplici e potenti e la miscela di distorsioni quasi stoner e melodie accessibili. Il successo di quell'album e del singolo "Best of you" giovò parecchio ai Foo, che un vero successo forse non lo vedevano dal 1999, da "Learn to Fly" o "Next Year", magari, e così Dave Grohl tornò ad essere citato come una leggenda vivente del rock'n'roll - cosa che effettivamente è - e la sua band ad essere un nume tutelare dell'attuale scena musicale americana.
Da "In your honor", dai Grammy, dagli Mtv Awards eccetera sono passati 2 anni, ed ecco spuntare all'orizzonte un nuovo lavoro di Grohl e compagni, "Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace", a cui i nostri hanno lavorato appena 3 settimane, con standard di produzione più rozzi e diretti, per evidenziare il carattere sanguigno e genuino delle composizioni. E se l'iniziale, potentissima,"The Pretender" - nonostante l'arpeggio pari pari a quello di "Stairway to Heaven" - poteva stare benissimo nel disco rock di "In your honor", già dalla seconda traccia, "Let it die", dedicata a Kurt Cobain, spuntano inedite chitarre acustiche, predominanti per tutta la canzone e spazzate via solo nel ritornello dalla solita distorsione tamarra di Dave. E così accade anche per le tracce succesive, come "Stranger Things Have Happened" o "Summer's End", dall'andatura bluesata, e la mente dell'ascoltatore (colto) non può non volare al metodo di composizone elettro-acustico usato dai Led Zeppelin in "Over the hills and so far away" o "Ramble on", senza ovviamente che i Foo raggiungano talivette. Ma allora, sempre il solito ascoltare (colto) si chiederà, le care vecchie canzoni power pop dei Foo che fine hanno fatto? Ci sono ancora, niente paura, solo che sono poche: "Long Way To Ruin", con l'arpeggio distorto che fa tanto Pearl Jam, e l'invettiva anti-emo di "Cheers Up, Boys, Your Make Up Is Running", a dirci che il lato fun'n'roll della band di Seattle è ancora vivo, solo un pò sopito. In conclusione, "Home", una ballatona con tanto di pianoforte ad accompagnare la voce bassa e cantinelante di Grohl. Che dire? Un album brutto? Certo che no, tutt'altro. Molto godibile, ma forse un pò piatto: cercare di rifare "Led Zeppelin III", al giorno d'oggi, non è proprio il massimo, ma i Foo hanno talento, e Dave Grohl è davvero una leggenda vivente del rock'n'roll, e quindi, tuttosommato, glielo si può perdonare. Se non altro, perchè qualche canzone bella ce la regalano sempre. Sperando solo che nel prossimo album non decidano di tuffarsi negli anni '80 e tentare di rifare "Girls Girls Girls". Sarebbe patetico. Peace.
