Poco da fare: se devo scegliere la mia scena musicale preferita dico "MADCHESTER".
Per farla breve, possiamo tracciare la sua nascita intorno a Manchester (ma va?) alle fine degli anni '80 e le sonorità provenivano direttamente da generi come il Rock Alternativo, il Rock Psichedelico e la musica Elettronica, per la maggior parte Acid House.
I gruppi appartenenti a questa scena si formarono nei primi anni '80 quando in quel di Manchester dominavano gruppi del calibro di New Order e Smiths, che ispirarono non poco i novellini; proprio un nightclub, il famosissimo Haçienda, gestito da membri dei New Order e dalla Factory Records ebbe un ruolo davvero chiave nella diffusione delle sonorità Madchester.
Questo tipo di locali ebbe sempre più successo anche in correlazione con l'ampia diffusione dell'ecstasy (MDMA), che incuriosì sempre più giovani a frequentarli.
Gli Happy Mondays furono testimoni in prima persona di ciò che ho appena raccontato: la loro fondazione risale al 1980 e possono essere considerati uno dei primi gruppi in assoluto ad aver dato inizio alla scena, seguiti poi dagli Stone Roses e gli Inspiral Carpets.
"Squirrel And G-Man" è il debutto discografico, uscito nel 1987 proprio per la Factory Records e prodotto dalla leggenda John Cale (Velvet Underground).
Incredibile come siano quasi passati 30 anni dalla sua pubblicazione...
Non si può ancora parlare di influenze elettroniche ma con queste 10 tracce hanno la possibilità di presentarsi egregiamente a noi questi fattoni, dimostrando che non ci sono prima donne ma ognuno ha la sua particolare mansione: il cantato di Shaun Ryder è il suo personalissimo sbraito (su liriche piuttosto nonsense) è affiancato da un basso dall'eccezionale sound, con riff lineari e non particolarmente complicati ma melodici e d'effetto come pochi; le chitarre, a sua volta, seguono in modo minimale e sballato le sonorità Funk e la batteria ci mette del suo, spesso con entrate e fill davvero tribali; le tastiere sono d'importanza vitale per la riuscita di un'effettistica che provveda un background sognante e allegro.
I brani seguono quasi tutti lo stesso filo conduttore, complice l'acerbità del gruppo, ma ci sono comunque prove memorabili come la super melodica "Olive Oil" (molto Stone Roses, qualcuno direbbe), "Oasis" (ogni riferimento a cose e/o persone è puramente casuale) e la memorabile "24 Hour Party People", da considerarsi un inno per questa comunità musicale (da cui prende il titolo anche un film-quasi documentario, datato 2002, su questo periodo).
Ecco gettate le basi fondamentali del Madchester. Ma è ancora l'alba di questa colorata scena e degli stessi Happy Mondays, che avranno modo di consacrarsi grazie ai dischi successivi e altre bravate.
