Michael Schenker è uno dei chitarristi più istrionici, bravi, creativi e pazzi, non solo della Germania, ma di tutto il mondo. Inizia giovanissimo, da enfant-prodige, la sua carriera insieme al fratello Rudolf con gli Scorpions nel 1972. Suona solo nel disco di esordio, "Lonesome Crow", e per una fortunata serie di coincidenze finisce negli Ufo.
"Phenomenon, Force it, No Heavy Petting, Lights out, Obsession" sono gli album di studio che registra con loro. Lascerà la band a causa di alcuni dissidi nel 1979, dopo il trionfale disco live "Strangers in the Night". E qui comincia la mitica storia del Michael Schenker Group e del primo album omonimo.
La carriera solistica di Schenker parte veramente alla grande grazie anche ai grandi musicisti che lo affiancano: il batterista e session man Simon Phillips (attualmente nei Toto), il bassista Mo Foster, il grande tastierista Don Airey e alla voce l'allora misconosciuto Gary Berden, ex cantante di Fraser Nash. E poi c'è ovviamente lui, il mitico, grande, granitico Michael Schenker, un chitarrista raffinato ma heavy, dotato di un grande estro ma anche di una genialità non comune.
Lo si nota ad esempio nella prima traccia, Armed and Ready, un pezzo di sano hard rock come piace a noi. Cry for the nations è pezzo di grande pathos dove il cantante Gary Barden fa capire che diavolo di voce possiede. Victim of illusion è un altro bel pezzo duro, con un buon riff e un ritornello mica male, mentre Bijou pleasurette è un pezzo classico e virtuosistico dove Michael si scatena.
Poi c'è Feels like a good thing, altro bel pezzo hard rock. Ma il capolavoro dell'album è indubbiamente Into the arena, pezzo destinato a entrare di diritto fra i grandi classici e presenza fissa nei set dal vivo. A cominciare dall'intro, passando per il basso martellante e il bel riff di tastiera, si può dire che questa canzone sia oro puro. Che figata!
Looking out from nowhere è forse il pezzo più commerciale dell'album mentre Tales of mistery è una bella ballata acustica. L'album si chiude con Lost Horizons, un pezzo unico, epico, misterioso, che trasmette emozioni vibranti.
Alcuni lo definiscono un po' acerbo e forse non è l'album più conosciuto degli MSG, ma sicuramente è uno dei più belli. Esordire così è il sogno di ogni chitarrista.
