A volte ritornano.
Chi avrebbe mai pensato al ritorno di una delle piu' seminali e spesso sottovalutate band rock degli ultimi quarant'anni? 32 anni dopo l'ultimo e secondo disco della band e soprattutto dopo la morte di tre quinti del gruppo?
Premettiamo subito che il disco è godibile e di mestiere come potrebbe essere un disco dei Rolling Stones da vent'anni a questa parte, nessuna sorpresa, poche chitarre taglienti come nei '70, un saggio bilanciamento tra canzoni piu' ruvide e rock'n'roll e canzoni lente e melodiche. Erano un paio di anni che i sopravissuti DAVID JOHANSEN e SYLVAIN SYLVAIN avevano rimesso su il baraccone con illustri (l'ex HANOI ROCKS, SAMI YAFFA) e meno illustri sconosciuti, per girare nuovamente il mondo riproponendo in sede live le loro vecchie canzoni.
Ora, vuoi per divertimento, vuoi per vile denaro ?! ecco il ritorno discografico della band che negli anni '70 anticipo' in un solo colpo due movimenti musicali come il Glam street ottantiano e il punk rock dei settanta. Certo, ci si potrebbe domandare, per ore, cosa serva una formazione priva dei suoi elementi da novanta passati a miglior vita: JOHNNY THUNDERS, JERRY NOLAN e ARTHUR DANE erano difficili da sostituire, cosicche' questa reunion diviene una specie di progetto a due in cui JOHANSEN la fa da padrone con la sua voce arrochita dal tempo e da qualcos'altro. Si parte bene con due buoni rock'n'roll, WE'RE ALL IN LOVE con i suoi inserti d'armonica e RUNNIN' AROUND con il refrain che ti si stampa immediatamente in testa.
Alla terza canzone, PLENTY OF MUSIC, il ritmo cala con una lenta e romantica ballad. DANCE LIKE A MONKEY è il ruffiano brano scelto come singolo, PUNISHING WORLD, FISHNETS & CIGARETTES, GOTTA GET AWAY FROM TOMMY sono un bel trittico rock alla vecchia maniera, intervallate da MAIMED HAPPINESS, ballad in cui JOHANSEN canta con ugola dylaniana. Primo ospite è MICHAEL STIPE dei REM che duetta sulla bella DANCING ON THE LIP OF A VULCANO, seguita dalla mainstream I AIN'T GOT NOTHIN'.
C'e' ancora tempo per il r'n'r punkeggiante di RAINBOW STORE e GIMME LUV & TURN ON THAKEE LIGHTAKE A GOOD LOOK AT MY GOOD LOOKS dove compare il secondo ospite, il vecchio amico IGGY POP. Chiude il tutto T e la bonus track SEVENTEEN presente nella limited edition del cd insieme ad un DVD con il "Making of the ALBUM". Lontani dai tempi dell'autodistruzione dei '70, questo disco riporta alla galla una band capace di scrivere ancora canzoni divertenti lontane dalla provocazione dei bei tempi, ma si spera capaci di invogliare i piu' giovani ad interessarsi ai due tesori nascosti incisi piu' di trent'anni fa e per ridare importanza e lustro ad una band che avrebbe meritato di piu'.
