La desolazione di un campo abbandonato e abitato solo da spaventapasseri, la rabbia dell'essere sconfitti, la tristezza di quando nella vita viene meno ogni forma di amore e conforto. Fantasmi che ritornano spesso nelle tematiche dei Novembers Doom band americana attiva ormai da 12 anni e resasi famosa come una delle più autorevoli realtà nell'ambito Doom/Death Metal.
Dopo essere partiti come figli indiretti del sound dei My Dying Bride i nostri sono arrivati alla definitiva maturazione ed indipendenza artistica con "The Knowing" (2000) consacrandosi con "To Welcome The Fade" (2002) in cui però si facevano spesso sentire influenze tipiche di un certo metal avanguardistico di band come Opeth e Katatonia.
Forti del successo ottenuto con il suo predecessore i Novembers Doom si sono saputi superare dando alla luce un autentico capolavoro autonomo, potente e toccante nel 2005, pubblicando "The Pale Haunt Departure". Le coordinate del suond dei Novembers Doom sono ben delineate : riff potenti e cadenzati, ritmi lenti e rabbia e malinconia in dosi equilibrate. "The Pale Haunt Departure" è un disco inquietante e crepuscolare come la sua copertina, in cui ritmiche death e sognanti brani acustici si amalgamano alla perfezione. Su tutto la voce del mastodontico Paul Kuhr, uno dei cantanti più espressivi e intensi della scena, devastante nel growl e delicato nel pulito, e autore di tutti i testi, molto concreti e poco trasfigurati in metafore (cosa atipica in un genere come questo) ma non per questo inferiori.
La traccia omonima che apre "The Pale Haunt Departure" è una ferale botta sonora di proporzioni indescrivibili, abbastanza sostenuta nel suo incedere inquietante, e dominata da un ritornello, se così si può definire, quasi anthemico. Sicuramente si tratta di uno dei punti cardine del disco nonchè di una delle canzoni Doom più belle che abbia mai sentito, doveroso segnalarne inoltre il testo. Oltre che nella title track non mancano certo altri momenti in cui l'incedere si fa ferale e il sound della band americana si fa più vicino a quello dei primi Paradise Lost o My Dying Bride, vedasi la mastodontica "Swallowed By The Moon" sostenuta da ritmiche marziali sfumanti in un refrain acustico e sognante oppure la lunga traccia "In The Absence Of Grace".
Oltre alla traccia di apertura almeno altri tre sono i capolavori contenuti in "The Pale Haunt Departure". Innanzitutto "Autumn Reflection" in cui scompare il growl, uno dei brani più toccanti di tutto il panorama Doom, in cui l'atmosfera si fa davvero drammatica soprattutto nel chorus e commovente sia nelle liriche che nel toccante e melodico passaggio che chiude il pezzo. Sugli scudi anche la canzone forse più trascinante del disco, nonchè caratterizzata da un testo assolutamente imperdibile cioè "Dark World Burden" costruita sul coinvolgente ritornello che va a stamparsi subito nella memoria grazie al suo feeling vagamente rock. Il tutto condito da strofe dirette e pesanti come macigni in cui si fa sentire tutta l'aggressività di Kuhr e della sua band. Da segnalare la conclusiva e devastante "Collapse Of The Falling Throe" aperto da un riff di puro Doom Metal per lasciare poi spazio ad una complessa stuttura death tuttavia accessibile. Da brividi il passaggio centrale in cui Kuhr tocca vette espressive con il growl sorprendenti.
In sostanza stiamo parlando di un capolavoro di rara bellezza per gli appassionati del genere. Un disco malinconico, triste e impregnato di rabbia ma assolutamente lontano da qualsiasi pessimismo retorico e scontato. Senza dubbio i Novembers Doom rappresentano una delle band che meglio ha saputo imparare dai capolavori prodotti da questo genere nei primi anni 90 senza cadere nell'imitazione ma creando lavori personali e sentiti perciò consiglio l'ascolto.
Non ne resterete delusi.
