Il vecchio Robert è tornato ed è pure ringiovanito. Eh si perchè dopo l'ultimo egregio lavoro principalmente composto da cover, "Dreamland", l'eterno freakettone ritorna con un album ispirato: un concentrato di blues, folk, timbri etnici, tocchi di elettronica ed esplosioni rock di classe come ai bei tempi con i Led Zeppelin.
Accompagnato dai più giovani Strange Sensation che lavorano con lui da qualche anno, Plant riduce i virtuosismi vocali a favore di un suono accattivante ed eterogeneo, il che risulta una scelta più che azzeccata risultando forse l'apice della sua carriera solista, mai stata eccezionale, a parte le ultime due piccole perle "Fate of Nations" e "Dreamland", appunto. E per questo disco il nostro Robert si è fatto produrre dall'etichetta indipendente Sanctuary (che produce un altro vecchio del rock, Morrisey), sintomo che, nonostante sia ricco sfondato, la sua mentalità non è cambiata e come ai vecchi tempi preferisce la qualità della musica che alla quantità di copie vendute.
Il disco parte con "Another Tribe" intrisa di un sapore arabico e di echi orientali, prosegue con "Shine It All Around" con il suo riff potente ed un po' ruffiano. Nel ritmato "Freedom Fries" sembra esserci il tocco di Jimmy Page. "Tin Pan Valley" si avvale di un attacco elettronico da far invidia ai Massive Attack per poi esplodere in un potente rock con Plant che riesce a toccare alti livelli, invece "The Enchanter" fa praticamente il contrario, è un grande blues che si adagia nel finale in ritmi elettronici dal vago sapore africano. "All The King's Horses" e "Dancing In Heaven" sono due belle ballate acustiche dal gusto zeppeliniano, la title-track è un blues energico con grandi arrangiamenti e cori superbi. "Takamba" e "Let The Four Winds Blow" sono due pezzi blues di tutto rispetto ma il meglio arriva con "Somebody Knocking" che parte come un blues acustico per poi arrivare alla melodia dove Robert sfoggia tutta la sua bravura e la sua voce è caldamente perfetta. Il finale "Brother Ray" è un omaggio di un minuto a Ray Charles dove il piano e le percussioni la fanno da padrone mentre Plant si lascia andare a gorgheggi e lamenti incomprensibili ma allo stesso tempo incantevolmente belli.
Il nuovo disco di Robert Plant probabilmente è il migliore dei dischi fatti da un componente del dirigibile da "The Song Remains The Same" (sì perchè i successivi "In Through The Out Door" e "Coda" non sono assolutamente ai livelli degli album precedenti) e per questo da non perdere per rivivere in qualche modo gli anni '70.
