Così si apre l'opera ultima dei Cranberries, gruppo il cui genere è un rock sempre più pop e la cui filosofia di vita sembra radicalmente cambiata nel corso degli anni.
Pensandoci bene è più che normale che la musica di un gruppo muti negli anni, perchè la vita pian piano cambia ogni persona, e i Cranberries hanno avuto più di dieci anni di carriera in cui sono cresciuti, sono cambiati, e anche la loro musica si è modificata.
Wake Up And Smell The Coffee è un album che sicuramente non rimarrà nella storia. I Cranberries hanno dato tanto, sono diventati la band irlandese più famosa al mondo dopo gli U2, davvero difficili da scavalcare. E in questo ultimo album sembra che non vogliano più dimostrare tanto, sembrano aver perso qualcosa durante il loro cammino artistico.
L'album a parer mio non è un brutto prodotto, non è da cestinare né da dimenticare, ma manca qualcosa, sembra essere sufficente ma non eccellente.
La traccia d'apertura è la delicata Never Grow Old, che come Analyze parla della vita di tutti i giorni, del tempo che passa, di cose semplici.
Ed è a parer mio una delle tracce più positive, insieme ad Analyze, famoso primo singolo estratto, che ricorda leggermente la lontana Dreams, Time Is Ticking Out, piccolo momento di polemica contro l'inquinamento e secondo singolo estratto, This Is The Day, traccia rock molto agrressiva nel sound e ultimo singolo estratto dall'album, Dying Inside, davvero delicatissima e triste, I Really Hope, pezzo più travolgente dell'album, Carry On, dolce brano alla O'Riordan, e la sussurrata Chocolate Brown. In particolare vanno apprezzate Dying Inside e Carry On perchè a parer mio riportano ai primi lavori e sanno davvero di mirtilli scuri dei boschi d'Irlanda, quando erano ancora acerbi.
Si perchè questi mirtilli hanno un sapore nuovo, sono maturati, ma non funzioano come prima e presto loro stessi si staccheranno dall'albero della gloria per prendere strade diverse.
In questa raccolta si fa notare anche la traccia che da il nome all'album, che appare aggressiva e bella, ma ha un intro troppo lungo e comunque sembra che le manchi un non so chè. Si rivela una buona canzone anche The Concept, che ascoltando la musichetta iniziale tutto sembra meno un pezzo dei Cranberies, ma sul finire è Cranberries al 100%, quando Dolores ripete "Night all night all night, night all night all night..".
Particolare è Pretty Eyes, accompagnata dal pianoforte, che non è affatto un brutto pezzo, ma insieme a tante altre canzoni risulta un pò povera dell'anima dei Cranberries.
Stesso discorso per Do You Know, mentre Every Morning è l'episodio meno bello del disco, con un ritornello che lascia un pò a desiderare.
Insomma, non è l'album dei Cranberries che consiglierei a qualcuno che già non li ama, non è il loro più grande capolavoro ed è lontano dall'essero, sono pochi i pezzi considerabili capolavori, ma non è assolutamente un disco insufficente, perchè il sound è piacevole e ci sono parecchi brani piuttosto belli, oltre al fatto che l'album appare sincero e umile per una band del loro calibro. Ma il mio voto è anche condizionato dal fatto che la loro musica a me piace, pur riconoscendo e ribadendo che i VERI Cranberries non sono questi.
