Dopo aver letto i commenti delle mie recensioni di Bruce Springsteen, dove si diceva che questo album e' meglio di "The River", sono stato incuriosito ed ho voluto ascoltarlo. Io di Tom Petty avevo gia' ascoltato qualche singolo sparso (per lo piu' quelli di fine anni 80 e inizio 90) ma non avevo mai ascoltato nessun album intero e soprattutto non avevo mai sentito nessuna canzone proveniente da questo "Damn The Torpedoes".
Tutto sommato si potrebbe fare un paragone tra Tom e il Boss, c'e' pero' da dire che il loro stile e' completamente differente: Petty fa un rock piu' spensierato e piu' "giovanile", il rock di Springsteen e' piu' "adulto". Riassumendo le loro carriere si puo' dire che il Boss ha avuto piu' "picchi" ma anche piu' cadute in basso di Petty, che invece ha sempre fatto della continuità un suo punto di forza.
Ora pero' parliamo di questo album. L'inizio e' semplicemente devastante "Refugee","Here Comes My Girl" e "Even The Loser" sono tre canzoni sicuramente non innovative (siamo nel 1979 e il rock'n'roll non era certo una novita') ma di una bellezza sorprendente, la vera forza di questo album e' che tutto e' al suo posto, sia la voce di Tom sia la musica degli Heartbreakers. Si va avanti con altri episodi riuscitissimi ("Don't Do Me Like That","You Tell Me") fino alla splendida ballata finale "Louisiana Rain". All'album manca solo la "perla" (anche se "Refugee" ci si avvicina molto) per il resto e' un album che per la sua semplicità è splendido.
Tom Petty trovera' maggiore notorieta' 10 anni dopo con "Full Moon Fever", ma gia' dagli anni 70 possiamo metterlo allo stesso livello del Boss senza problemi.
