Attualmente Tom Petty è il miglior songwriter americano. Negli anni '70 e '80 (almeno fino all'85) c'era stato Bruce Springsteen a rubargli la scena ma, dopo il declino del Boss, Tom ha avuto via libera per il suo successo ottenuto soprattutto con l'ottimo "Full Moon Fever" del 1989 (realizzato senza gli Heartbreakers).
Questo ovviamente non vuol dire che gli album precedenti di Petty siano brutti: il debutto del 1976 mostrava già una maturità impressionante soprattutto con una delle canzoni Pop Rock più belle di sempre("American Girl"), poi c'è stato il mezzo passo falso (per me anche più di mezzo) con l'LP del 1978 "You're Gonna Get It!", che mostrava più energia ma decisamente meno ispirazione del debutto. Nel 1979 Tom Petty fece il suo capolavoro "Damn The Torpedoes", il quale contiene almeno 5 delle sue migliori canzoni, poi un altro lavoro inferiore nella carriera del songwriter della Florida con "Hard Promises" che ha solo una canzone di livello ("The Waiting") e troppi riempitivi.
Dopo questa introduzione possiamo parlare di "Long After Dark": musicalmente l'album è molto simile a "Damn The Torpedoes" non che con "Hard Promise" ci fosse stata una rivoluzione del sound, però sicuramente il suono degli Heartbreakers era più "moscio" e "ammorbidito", in questo nuovo lavoro invece c'è tutta l'energia dei primi tre album di Petty. Si parte con l'ottima "One Story Town", si prosegue con il singolo "You Got Lucky" che è una buona canzone ma Tom ha fatto singoli migliori di questo, poi "Deliver Me" e la splendida "Change Of Hearts". Qualche riempitivo c'è anche in questo album ("Finding Out" per esempio) ma rispetto a "Hard Promises" questo è un lavoro sicuramente più ispirato.
Tom Petty saprà fare meglio in futuro (il già citato "Full Moon Fever") ma questo LP è sicuramente un buon tassello dell'ottima carriera del songwriter che attualmente negli USA non ha rivali.
Il voto reale è un 3,5.
