In un periodo in cui nella vicina Norvegia stavano affiorando nuove realtà musicali che estremizzavano quanto già detto da Venom, Bathory e compagnia bella, con liriche pregne di caproni, pentacoli e sabba vari, agli albori degli anni '90 in Svezia nasceva una scena estrema, ma al contempo estremamente diversa da quella norvegese, attorno alla città di Stoccolma.
Gruppi come Dismember, Unleashed, Grave ed Entombed muovevano i loro primi passi. Nasceva così il Death Metal Svedese (che nulla ha a che vedere con le brutture moderne dei "nuovi" In Flames e soci), un genere destinato a lasciare un segno indelebile nella storia del metal. Quando ancora parlare di Odino non era un "trend" e avere al collo un martello di Thor non era "fashion" gli Unleashed, capitanati dal sommo Johnny Hedlund, pubblicavano questo magistrale cd.
L'essenza del puro Swedish Death è qui, rinchiuso in 11 tracce battagliere + bonus track. Serve altro? Dopo l'arpeggio della prima traccia, che aiuta a calarsi in un'atmosfera gelida e oscura come non mai, con "Dead Forever" si scatena l'inferno. Nessun calo di stile, produzione eccellente e un drumming preciso e potente fanno di questo cd un capolavoro, un must per ogni appassionato di metal estremo e soprattutto di Death Metal! Nella versione che troviamo oggi in commercio oltre alle 11 tracce del cd originale, ne troviamo altre 6 tratte dal demo "And the laughter has died". Questo sarebbe ottimo se non fosse che di queste 6, 5 sono già presenti sull'album suonate meglio e con una produzione decisamente migliore.. E va bè! Basta il pensiero! In compenso però ci sono due video, uno della eccellente "Before Creation of Time" che presenta qualche problema audio, e l'altro del mid-tempo "The One Insane" ben più professionale.
Onore e gloria agli Unleashed e al loro"deus ex machina" Johnny Hedlund. Ci rivedremo nel Valhalla.
