I Within Temptation nascono come una band di amici che suonano il tipo di musica del quale sono appassionati, senza troppe pretese. Nel 1997, quando i soli nomi di punta tra le pochissime metal band con una voce femminile erano The Gathering e Theatre Of Tragedy, il gruppo di Utrecht fa il proprio ingresso nella scena con l'album "Enter", un mix ancora acerbo ma dirompente di chitarre doom, voce gutturale, voce angelica femminile e tastiere solenni. Sulla falsa riga del debutto, la band pubblica l'anno successivo un ep intitolato "The dance" contenente brani inediti, remix e versioni acustiche di canzoni già edite.
Nel 2000 vede la luce "Mother earth", tutt'oggi inarrivabile capolavoro della loro carriera, coronato da atmosfere malinconiche riconducibili al folklore celtico. Nonostante la qualità impareggiabile, il successo tarda ad arrivare, ed è soltanto grazie al contratto con la Gun Records, in grado di offrire alla band una distribuzione più vasta, che il singolo "Ice queen" comincia ad insinuarsi nella testa di molti, trasformando Sharon Den Adel e compagni da piccola band di nicchia a fenomeno internazionale. Da qui in poi si comincia ad avvertire qualche piccola tensione all'interno della band. I fan sono aumentati e le aspettative nei confronti del nuovo album non possono essere deluse. Quattro anni di duro lavoro portano i Within Temptation alla pubblicazione di "The silent force", lavoro che li consacra come band di culto anche al di fuori del vecchio continente, portandoli ad una visibilità mediatica di cui soltanto Evanescence e Lacuna Coil godevano. Ecco però che la loro musica subisce un impensabile mutamento. È più che evidente l'autoimpartita virata commerciale; si prediligono un songwriting uniforme e ritornelli memorizzabili alle magiche atmosfere del passato. Grazie alla collaborazione con un'orchestra, anche l'aspetto sinfonico viene messo in risalto, danneggiando però la performance degli strumentisti e donando alle composizioni un gusto smaccatamente pop. L'unico segno di miglioramento proviene dalla voce di Sharon, più versatile ed intensa che mai. "The silent force" non era un cattivo album. Nonostante un evidente meccanismo economico avesse insudiciato la sincerità della band, aveva addirittura i presupposti per superare il precedente; sono state la pesante staticità in fase compositiva, la superficialità delle parti chitarristiche e la sovrabbondanza di orchestrazioni a renderlo un mancato capolavoro.
Nel 2006 il bel paese accoglie per la prima volta la band su uno dei suoi palchi più rinomati, quello dell'Evolution Festival. Grazie ad una posizione di rilievo in scaletta ed alla performance deludente degli headliner della serata, i Within Temptation portano a casa il trofeo per l'esibizione più sentita della giornata. È stato tuttavia triste constatare come al di sotto del palco ci fossero più ragazzine infatuate dalle movenze di Sharon che ascoltatori estasiati da tanta bellezza sonora come il sottoscritto, che non riesce tuttora a considerare la suddetta performance come la migliore della giornata a causa di un'evidente volontà della band di catalizzare l'energia della band sulla cantante, unica colonna portante nella resa di alcune canzoni semplicistiche tra le quali primeggia la ruffiana "Stand my ground". I presupposti che mi hanno portato all'approccio con il nuovo album non sono dunque stati tra i migliori, considerando anche il fatto che dopo lo split Tarja Turunen-Nightwish qualcosa nel mercato discografico si è mosso; tutti i nomi di punta della frangia femminile del mondo metallico hanno deciso competere rincorrendo in una gara all'ultimo respiro il successo ottenuto dai finnici col capolavoro "Once". In ordine cronologico Lacuna Coil, Theatre Of Tragedy, Evanescence, Tristania, Within Temptation, After Forever e per ultimi, i rinnovati Nightwish (solo gli Epica hanno deciso di aspettare) hanno fatto ritorno, o lo faranno nei propri mesi. La verve di un tempo, che qualcuno ha sfortunatamente perso per strada, sembra non avere abbandonato il sestetto olandese, che con "The heart of everything" ha deciso di spiazzare critica e fan.
Per quello che viene definito il primo vero album metal della loro carriera, i Within Temptation hanno voluto fare le cose in grande, perfezionando al meglio ciò che di buono era stato fatto in passato ed epurando il proprio sound di alcune impurità stilistiche che sembrano ormai un lontano ricordo. Passano dunque in secondo piano le parti sinfoniche ed irrompono nell'economia sonora le ruvide chitarre dell'accoppiata Jolie-Westerholt, le eterogenee ritmiche create dalla batteria di Stephen van Haestregt e dal basso di Jeroen van Veen sulle quali si stagliano le romantiche keyboards di Martijn Spierenburg. Sono inoltre aggiunti nuovi ingredienti all'impasto: chitarra acustica, mandolino, backing vocals maschili e samples cinematografici intensificano l'impatto emotivo dei brani. La prova di Sharon dietro al microfono è superba: la cantante ha sviluppato il suo stile in maniera incredibile, interpretando ogni brano in maniera diversa. Le tonalità alte spesso lasciano posto a quelle basse e in alcuni passaggi troviamo sorprendenti parentesi operistiche. In altre recensioni ho definito quella di Floor Jansen la miglior voce femminile del metal, ma sono stato costretto a ricredermi. L'interpretazione di Sharon è così intima e delicata da sfiorare la perfezione; sono sempre più convinto che se gli angeli avessero una voce, probabilmente sarebbe la sua. I testi scritti a quattro mani dalla bella cantante e dal marito affrontano temi profondi quali amore, peccati, dubbi, rimpianti, bugie e verità. Tra immagini decadenti, romantiche introspezioni emotive ed amorose dediche stilnovistiche, essi vanno alla ricerca del centro di ogni cosa, di ogni sistema, ed in particolare dell'uomo. Il cuore è visto come la rosa dei venti della vita, permette di capire i propri sbagli, suggerisce come porvi rimedio ed in cosa sia giusto credere.
"The bowling", la traccia d'apertura, è una chiara dimostrazione di quale sia la nuova direzione intrapresa dalla band. Nemmeno l'orecchiabilità del ritornello inficia la durezza e la potenza delle trame chitarristiche e la ruvidità del cantato nelle strofe. Il singolo di lancio "What have you done" vede la partecipazione di Keith Caputo dei Life Of Agony, il duetto tra la sua voce e quella di Sharon è veramente bello, le voci si amalgamano alla perfezione ma le coordinate sulle quali si muove il brano sono troppo debitrici nei confronti degli Evanescence di "Fallen"; chi non apprezza la band americana farà forse fatica ad apprezzare questo brano, tuttavia intenso e ben orchestrato. "Frozen" presenta ai fan l'anima più pop della band; qui le chitarre lasciano spazio alla dolcezza vocale per dare un tono velatamente metallico all'insieme, ma ecco arrivare dei maestosi cori in latino ad introdurci nell'episodio più operistico, nonché primo highlight dell'opera, "Our solemn hour". I Therion dovrebbero imparare dai Within Temptation come dosare al meglio le parti corali; forse risulterebbero più digeribili e meno dispersivi. Segue la traccia che dà il titolo all'album, la quale riprende il discorso intrapreso da "The bowling". Un pianoforte, un mandolino e un violoncello ci introducono in "Hand of sorrow", secondo apice del disco dove orchestra e chitarre diventano un corpo unico e la prestazione di Sharon risulta superlativa, soprattutto nel ritornello. Tutti gli elementi delle tracce precedenti (pop, rock, metal, gothic e musica classica) vengono poi riassunti in "The cross". Per descrivere "Final destination" si potrebbe usare il termine "Film score metal", non inteso alla maniera dei Rhapsody, ma identificando un tipo di canzone di chiara matrice metallica che potrebbe far da sottofondo ad immagini cinematografiche (la traccia è infatti ispirata al primo episodio dell'omonima saga americana). Chiunque volesse sciogliere il proprio cuore in un passionale canto d'amore non deve assolutamente perdersi "All I need", ballata antologica completamente scritta ed arrangiata da Sharon.
Fino a questo punto l'album si assesta su livelli medio-alti, ma è con le due canzoni successive che rasenta la perfezione assoluta. I Nightwish hanno composto un capolavoro sinfonico come "Ghost love score"? Ben venga, i Within Temptation possono addirittura fare di meglio. In "The truth beneath the rose", capolavoro dell'album e di tutto il metal sinfonico, convergono tutti gli elementi che li hanno contraddistinti in questi dieci anni d'attività. Ritroviamo la solennità gotica di "Enter", la malinconia struggente di "Mother earth" e la magniloquenza sinfonica dei migliori episodi di "The silent force". Aggiungendo a tutto ciò un crescendo emotivo che sfocia in un finale incredibile, che tuttora non riesco a descrivere con semplici parole, la band strappa di mano (con prepotenza) lo scettro che finora era appartenuto alla band di Tuomas Holopainen. Il testo ruota attorno ad un concetto secondo il quale è importante cercare sempre la verità, anche quando tutto ciò che sin da piccoli ci è stato inculcato da influenze esterne ha sempre tentato di nascondercela. Posso affermare con convinzione che questa è la canzone più bella mai scritta dai Within Temptation, i quali dimostrano di non aver più nulla da invidiare ad altre band. Come se non bastasse, un delicatissimo piano e la voce di Sharon, con incedere rasserenante ed appagato, ci regalano un altro capolavoro, un'altra bellissima ballata che risponde al nome di "Forgiven".
Perdonate la lunghezza della recensione, vi assicuro che l'album merita ancora più attenzione di quella da me dedicatagli. Aprite gli occhi, e dimenticate la piccola sbandata di "The silent force"; soltanto pochi eletti saranno in grado di offrirci opere assolute come "The heart of everything", così intense e disarmanti nella loro sincerità.

L'accompagnamento orchestrale rende maestose e solenni le melodie, senza però oscurarle: davvero notevole.
Ancora una volta i Within Temptation ci lasciano piacevolmente stupiti e ci offrono questo 'The Heart of Everything', il quale rappresenterà sicuramente una fase importantissima della loro evoluzione.
